The Original Xenophon
An Athenian, the son of Gryllus, Xenophon was born about 440B.C. In his early life he was a student of Socrates but is best known for his decision to join the ten thousand Greek mercenaries who were enlisted into the army of Cyrus, brother of the Persian King Artaxerxes, whose intent was to overthrow the king and take the Persian throne for himself. In the ‘Anabasis’, Xenophon recounts the march into Upper Asia where Cyrus’ army met that of Artaxerxes at the battle of Cunaxa (401B.C.). In the battle, Cyrus lost his life, his barbarian troops were dispersed and the Greek contingent was left isolated on the wide plains between the Tigris and the Euphrates.
After the treacherous murder of Clearchus and the other Greek commanders, Xenophon was elected one of the generals of the Ten Thousand and played a prominent role in the Greeks' memorable retreat along the Tigris, over the high table-lands of Armenia, in the depths of winter, through territory occupied by ferocious tribes, to the Black Sea port of Trapezus. His account is remarkable for the resourcefulness, courage and determination shown in overcoming numerous barriers and obstacles, combined with his disciplined concern for the troops under his command.
